Kate was dating Sam, 39, around 2016 and had previously been in a relationship with fellow footballer Wayne Carey.
A friend of the footballer added: “He was always a bit of a party boy but was never known to be involved with drugs while playing.”
It was revealed earlier this week that Sam had been charged with trafficking commercial quantities of illegal drugs following a raid on a Melbourne property.

The retired footballer was charged after Wednesday morning’s raid, with detectives allegedly seizing methylamphetamine, 1,4-butanediol and a Mercedes-Benz.
Sam opted not to appear when his case was raised in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday, with his lawyer saying he had chosen to remain in custody.
The case was adjourned until August 10.

It comes after Western Australian police on April 20 seized a package said to contain $129,000 and was due to be delivered to an address in Melbourne.
Another package containing about a kilogram of methylamphetamine and 84 grams of cocaine hidden in a kitchen utensil was also allegedly intercepted by WA police.
Police will claim drugs were regularly hidden in white goods and shipped to Perth from Melbourne.

Speaking to AAP, Detective Inspector Craig Darlow said the alleged drug explosion produced a “remarkable result”.
“This is a warning that regardless of where you are located or how you operate, we will speak up to those involved in the manufacture and trafficking of illegal drugs and hold them accountable,” he said in a statement .
Sam made his AFL debut in 2004 before announcing his retirement at the end of the 2016 season.
