After a three day break, there are power outages again in Ecuador

The rains recorded in the Amazon and the mountains in the last few hours favored the operation of the hydroelectric plants, however the stormy power outages will last two hours a day in each sector, it says in this state portfolio.

Electricity rationing will be carried out at different times determined by the distribution companies and only on weekends will there be no cuts as on these days electricity consumption will be reduced by around 10 percent, the authority explained.

The break in power outages is welcome news for the residents of this country, but they blame President Guillermo Lasso for not taking timely measures to avoid them.

In addition, complaints about the announcement of the cuts shortly before they come into force are piling up on social networks, which is affecting people’s and companies’ planning.

The reason for this rationing, according to Energy and Mines Minister Fernando Santos Alvite, is to prevent a “collapse” of the electricity grid, whose supply capacities have been reduced due to the severe drought that is affecting the country.

Ecuador had not suffered a blackout since 2009, during the administration of then-President Rafael Correa, which encouraged the construction of hydroelectric projects and even exported energy to Colombia and Peru.
