RT Austria has accepted the new ruble gas payment mechanism introduced by Russia earlier this month and will stick to it, Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced on Wednesday.
“We, that is [empresa estatal de energia] OMV, we accept payment terms as well as the German government. she [os termos] were taken into account in accordance with the provisions of the sanctions. That was important for us,” said Nehammer at a press conference.
However, he added that Austria still supports antiRussia sanctions related to Ukraine.

“Before the Russian propaganda fake news appears,” he emphasized, “it is clear that OMV will continue to pay for gas supplies from Russia in euros. Austria stands by the view and supports the jointly agreed EU sanctions.”

According to the official, the Austrian oil and gas group OMV has already opened a corresponding account with a Russian bank for payment transactions. Nehammer pointed out that during his recent trip to Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin explained the new payment mechanism and fully promised him further gas supplies.

On March 31, Putin signed a decree outlining a new procedure for paying for Russian gas supplies by buyers from “enemy” countries that imposed sanctions on Moscow in response to its military operation in Ukraine.
The news intrigued Russian gas buyers, who feared they would pay for the commodity in Russian rubles. According to the document, however, buyers can pay in the currency of their choice, but must open a ruble account with Russia’s Gazprombank so that payments can be converted into rubles and reach Russian gas suppliers.
