After a less-than-great opening weekend, Shazam: Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg tweeted a thread on March 20th about his experiences with the film and his future projects.

“On Rotten Tomatoes I just got my lowest critic score and my highest audience score on the same movie 🤷‍♂️ I wasn’t expecting critical reruns of the first movie but I was still a little surprised because I think it’s a good movie, he wrote. “Well yeah. As I’ve been saying for a while, I’m very excited to return to horror (and try some new things as well). After six years of Shazam, I’m definitely done with superheroes for now.”

“Just to be clear, I have no regrets for doing the Shazam films,” he continued. “I learned so much and got to work with some really amazing people. I will forever be grateful that I had the privilege of directing two of these! It was a very challenging but valuable experience. One thing I’ve really been looking forward to is breaking away from the superhero discourse online. A lot of this is stressing me out so much and it will be nice not to have to think about it anymore.”

The Shazam sequel made less than an estimated $30.5 million in its opening weekend. Given that the film cost $110 million to make and another $100 million to market, it seems unlikely that Warner Bros. and DC Comics will win.

Before directing Shazam in 2019, Sandberg directed two well-received horror hits: Lights Out (2016) and Annabelle: Creation (2017).
