After the corruption scandal in the EU comes Metsolas first

After the corruption scandal in the EU comes Metsola’s first slip: he appoints his brother in law as head of cabinet

It certainly wasn’t the best way to respond to the criticism the company was receivingEuropean Union after the scandal of Qatar and Morocco bribes in Brussels. So after the unveiling of Foglio about the decision of the President of the European Parliament Robert Metsolato appoint his brother-in-law as his chief of staff Matthew Tabone, here the head of the European assembly is traced. And his spokesman officially shared it with a tweet. Yuri Laas: “I am pleased to announce that the next head of cabinet will be Roberta Metsola Leticia Zuleta de Reales Ansaldo. He will take up his duties from January 1, 2023.”

Just 24 hours earlier, however, Laas had confirmed to the Italian newspaper the intention of Maltese politicians to hand over the task to his brother-in-law Tabone. A decision that came in complete contradiction to that “Comprehensive Reforms” Metsola’s promises after the corruption scandal that engulfed the European institutions as they would have guaranteed the relative a salary between 15,000 and 20,000 euros per month for the entire duration of the mandate and offers him extensive career opportunities within the EU institutions.

The appointment, necessary after that of the predecessor Alessandro Chiochetti as secretary-general of Parliament “conforms to both the spirit and the letter of the Rules of Procedure,” Laas told Il Foglio, justifying the choice of the President’s brother-in-law: “It’s a position of trust” and “it’s up to the President alone to tell someone nominate whom he trusts.”

Tabone married Metsola’s younger sister, Lisa Tedesco Triccas, on September 5, 2015. Since 2009, the European Parliament’s Rules of Procedure have banned MEPs from hiring “close relatives”. But technically, Tabone is a relative, not a first-degree relative. And Laas had responded to the newspaper’s requests for clarification by saying Metsola would have preferred her sister to marry “someone as far away from politics as possible”, but “the President has very little control over which people fall in love, and firmly believes that people should be allowed to love whom they want to love”. In any case, “he does not consider it appropriate or legal to ask (Tabone) for a divorce in order to accept the new position”. However, the confidence shown by Laas dwindled so much a few hours later that Metsola decided to take a significant step back.
