For the second time in just a few days, the red carpet in Cannes became the scene of political protests. A group of activists yesterday unfurled a long banner with the words “Na França” (“En France”) and then many female names. At the end of the track, which the women performed with their fists raised and the smoking machines in their hands, was written: “129 femicides since the last Cannes festival”.

Presumably these were names of women who were killed because of their gender. Unlike a woman who loudly protested the rape of Ukrainian victims on Friday, security allowed activists to do their thing. It was unclear whether the protest was agreed upon.
This was followed by the premiere of Holy Spider, a thriller directed by Ali Abbasi about a man who murders sex workers in the Iranian city of Mashhad, convinced he is on a divine mission.
