An international donor conference is taking place today in Poland to raise money for refugees from Ukraine and internally displaced people. As a sign of solidarity, Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) will participate in “Stand Up for Ukraine” with a video message. The conference, which starts at 3 pm in Warsaw, was convened by the non-governmental organization Global Citizen, the European Commission and the Canadian government.

In his speech, Schallenberg will refer to Austria’s promised support of almost 40 million euros. According to the Vienna Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this amount should be significantly increased. It’s being worked on, he said. Funds from the donor conference go to United Nations programs and local aid initiatives, among others.

During the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in person in Warsaw should appear Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Schallenberg will be connected by video. Polish President Andrzej Duda also confirmed his presence. This was preceded by a social media campaign titled “Stand Up for Ukraine”.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in late February, more than two and a half million Ukrainians have crossed the border into Poland. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), around 4.4 million people have already left Ukraine. Before the start of the Russian war of aggression on February 24, 44 million people lived in the country.
