Former Georgia Bulldogs football player Akeem Hebron has died suddenly at the age of 34.

The team announced the tragic news on Sunday evening. The cause of death is not known.

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a beloved member of the Bulldog family, Akeem Hebron,” the statement said on Twitter.

“His dedication to Georgia Football will always be remembered. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones at this difficult time.”

Fans and even some retired Georgia players paid their respects to Hebron, who was a linebacker, after he unexpectedly passed away over the weekend, as confirmed by the Bulldogs. has reached out to the University of Georgia for comment.

Rennie Curan, who had stints in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers after three successful years in Georgia, where he was named a First-Team All-American by CBS and First Team All-SEC in 2009, tweeted a heartfelt Message dedicated to his former teammate.

“It is an incredible honor to be inducted into the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame!” shared the 2010 NFL draft pick. “The news was bittersweet as I learned that my brother and former teammate Akeem Hebron passed away unexpectedly.

“This is dedicated to you and many others who have been a blessing in my life.”

Hebron, who hails from Maryland, signed with the Bulldogs in 2006 but had a difficult start in life in Athens after being handed a year-long ban in 2007. He was arrested twice for underage liquor possession within a two-month span and was sent to Georgia Military College to have his behavior corrected, The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported in 2010.

Most recently, in December 2020, Hebron made an Instagram post to celebrate his son Adrian's eighth birthday.  He is survived by Adrian, his wife and their second son, Kate Michael, born in 2017

Hebron later returned to the University of Georgia and played 16 games for the Bulldogs from 2008–10, recording 10 total tackles. He also graduated from school where, according to his former coach, he learned a lot about life as an adult.

“Something good happened to Georgia and him,” coach Mark Richt told the Free Press 13 years ago. “The biggest thing that happened to him, I think, is that he grew into a man.” That’s one of the greatest things college is about.’

Among the tributes from fans, one person wrote under Georgia’s post mourning Hebron’s death: “So sad to be kidnapped at such a young age.” Condolences to his family. RIP he will not be forgotten by the Dawg Nation.’

Another Bulldogs supporter tweeted, “A Damn Good Dawg RIP” along with red and black heart emojis.

Bulldogs fans sent heartfelt tributes to Hebron on Sunday and Monday

‘This is terrible. “So sad to hear of Akeem’s passing,” shared another fan. “May God give comfort and peace to his family, friends and former teammates. May God hold her and ease her pain.”

“We are so sad to hear about Akeem!” wrote a college football fan who may know Hebron, adding, “He was a great young man!” Thoughts and prayers for his family.

Another Bulldogs fan wrote, “So young and so tragic.” Such a darn good pal, taken way too soon. We will miss you Akeem! GO DAWGS.’

Hebron’s last social media activity was in December 2022 when he celebrated his son Adrian’s eighth birthday.

The former college football player shared two pictures of his son and captioned the post, “Happy 8th birthday to my Mini!! Love you to the moon and back.’

Hebron is survived by Adrian, his other son, Kade Michael, who was born in July 2017, and his wife.
