The former president of the PP of Catalonia and founder of Vox, Alejo Vidal-Quadras, 78, was shot in the face this Thursday around 1:30 p.m. while walking along Núñez de Balboa street in Madrid, National Police sources report EL PAÍS. Vidal-Quadras was taken by the conscious capital’s emergency services in serious condition to the Gregorio Marañón Hospital, where he was admitted. The victim has a gunshot wound to the jaw area with an entry and exit hole, although police say there is no fear for his life.
Initial investigations indicate that two people were involved in the attack. According to eyewitnesses, a person wearing a black motorcycle helmet on his head and a blue coat and jeans was near Vidal-Cuadras’ house in the Salamanca district of Madrid. When he saw that the politician, who was walking alone in the area after attending the church service, came up to him and fired at least one direct shot at him from about two meters away. According to eyewitnesses, the attacker and the victim did not exchange a word.
After the shooting, the gunman ran and headed toward a black, large-displacement Yamaha TMAX motorcycle that was parked nearby, where a second person was waiting for him. After the attacker climbed in as a package, the two occupants fled at high speed and in a forbidden direction towards the nearby Hermosilla Street. Eyewitnesses described the shooter as a “young, small man.”
Police are currently investigating the incident as a common crime and not a terrorist attack. In fact, Interior has reported that the investigation was led by agents from the Madrid Police Headquarters Homicide Unit, rather than anti-terrorism specialists who intervene in an attack. In addition, scientific police specialists were sent to the scene, cordoning off several blocks in the area to collect evidence that would make it possible to identify the perpetrators of the shooting.
