Aleksander Barkov is proud to surpass his former colleague Jonathan Huberdeau

Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov is preparing to write an important chapter in the franchise’s history and he has no plans to stop as he believes he still has a lot to offer on the ice.

In Thursday’s game against the Red Wings in Detroit, the 28-year-old hockey player will surpass Jonathan Huberdeau by playing his 672nd regular-season game ever in a Florida jersey. For the Finn, who began his career in the National League in 2013-2014, this is an achievement synonymous with pride, especially as he continues to make great efforts to maintain an advantageous place in the Bettman circuit.

“This is my 11th season and it feels like only two weeks have passed. It is a great privilege and honor for me to be a Panther for so long. Hopefully there will be a few more years,” he told NHL.com.

“Since day one, he has always been the hardest working guy and the type of role model everyone needs,” added teammate Aaron Ekblad. He also shines regularly. He doesn’t just show up to do a job: he gets it done as a top-five or top-10 player in the league. He is an elite guy and has always been successful. However, time is of the essence.”

Huberdeau’s honors

Huberdeau was interviewed by the same source last week and praised his former trio partner. When the two players met at Barkov’s first development camp around ten years ago, something quickly clicked.

“I think when we were on the ice we had chemistry and we enjoyed playing together,” said the current Calgary Flames player. Still, I believe in his work ethic [fait la différence]…it’s in the gym and on the ice. He can skate and receives a pass for his skate. You can give him the puck anywhere and he will grab it. It’s impressive and it still surprises me.”

Barkov has scored two goals and six assists in seven duels this season. In 2022–2023, he contributed to the Panthers’ playoff success: his 16 points in 21 games led his team to the Stanley Cup Final. Additionally, he is six assists shy of reaching the 400 mark in the league.
