Life imprisonment without possibility of parole for killing his wife and child to cover up his financial problems and thefts from his clients. The condemnation of Alex Murdaughfamous Lawyer from South Carolina, scion of a family of lawyers and attorneys, puts an end to a major American dynasty that has prevailed in the south of the country for decades. After a quick jury verdict, reached in just three hours of deliberation at the end of a six-week trial, Judge Clifton Newman of the South Carolina Circuit Court issued the verdict convicting Murdaughlifelong prison sentence.
“Many people who have been accused by his family over the years have been sentenced to death for much less,” Newman explained his decision, addressing the former attorney, who was branded “not credible” after the repeated lies. Murdaugh, who was present in the courtroom for the reading of the sentence in prison overalls, reiterated for the umpteenth time that he was innocent and showed no emotion at the conviction. He was then quickly removed from the courtroom in front of the amazed eyes of his other son, Buster Murdaugh, who was also unaffected by the verdict despite testifying on his father’s behalf.
The process
The trial of the former lawyer opened on January 25 after more than a year of investigations. Since then, thanks also to a documentary series on Netflix, America has been glued to the television to follow step by step a case that has charmed her with family ties, financial difficulties to cover a luxurious lifestyle, opiate addiction and Murdaugh’s background in the past tried him to organize his murder in order to get one of his sons to collect the $10 million policy on his life. On June 7, 2021, the former attorney killed his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, at the family’s mansion in Islandton, South Carolina. The same attorney called for help in a heartbreaking call to 911, the local 113, in which he reported that they had shot themselves. Murdaugh has pleaded innocent from the outset, even denying that he was present at the crime scene like his mother.
The reproach
However, the investigation stalled him and the prosecution managed to convince the jury of his guilt based on the evidence they had gathered. The ex-lawyer was cornered by a short video his son shot just before his death: a video that undoubtedly showed him at the crime scene, forcing him to testify, admit he lied and confess that he was addicted to opiates, which he had his pockets full of when he called the police. The Murdaugh case has prompted investigators to reopen the investigation, although there were two other unsolved murders in 2015, that of Stephen Smith, a schoolmate of one of the former lawyer’s sons, and that of Gloria Satterfeld, a former Murdaugh housekeeper. However, the conclusion of the ongoing investigation will not change anything for the former lawyer: he remains behind bars for the rest of his life.
