Many people know Wednesday thanks to the work of actresses Christina Ricci and Jenna Ortega. But Alexandra Sicard is preparing to reveal a new facet of the famous character in the Quebec version of the musical The Addams Family.
Alexandra Sicard is not fooled; She knows very well that the character of Wednesday has a mythical aura that was built over decades and then reinforced by the recent success of the Netflix series of the same name. The thought of slipping into the skin can therefore make you dizzy. But most of all, you have to have the courage to make it your own.
“It is important to respect what was done in the past and its place in people’s imagination. But you shouldn’t be afraid to give it a personal touch and take creative liberties to take it somewhere else. This is where things get interesting, both for the audience and for the person playing it,” says the young 19-year-old artist.
At the same time, it provides an important clarification: The musical comedy “The Addams Family” has nothing to do with the films or the popular series. It features a new storyline written for the Broadway stage, where the characters made the leap some fifteen years ago. The show was first presented in New York with headliners Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth and was later presented around the world.
René Simard now directs the Quebec edition, supported by the choreography of the duo Team White.
More mature
We find Morticia, Gomez and their whole gang as they prepare to celebrate their traditional annual family festival. But Wednesday’s arrival on the arm of her new lover – a completely “normal” young man – will trigger a shockwave that will disrupt the celebrations and ultimately open a dialogue about difference and tolerance.
So it is a riper Wednesday that we will discover; The plot twists will allow Alexandra Sicard to paint a less narrow portrait of what the character has accustomed us to.
“My Wednesday is older and much more nuanced. Obviously she has this cold air about her, she’s very sharp in her words. But we discover that it is a facade, that she also hides a more human side when she falls in love. It reveals a really interesting, sensitive side of her,” says Alexandra Sicard.
- The musical comedy “The Addams Family” runs at the St-Denis Theater in Montreal until November 5th and then from December 21st to January 7th. It will be on display at the Salle Albert-Rousseau in Quebec City during the 2024 holidays.
