Algeria: 34 people killed in collision between tourist bus and commercial vehicle

The Algerian Civil Protection reported at least 34 dead and 12 injured this Wednesday, July 19, after a traffic accident near Tamanrasset (south).

Street drama in Algeria. At least 34 people were killed and 12 injured in a collision between a coach and a commercial vehicle near Tamanrasset in the south of the country on Wednesday, July 19 at 4:15 am, according to Civil Protection.

The accident, which was followed by a fire, happened when the bus connecting Adrar with Tamanrasset some 2,000km from the capital Algiers struck a commercial vehicle, this source said.

According to civil protection, rescue and evacuation work for the victims continues.

22,980 road accidents in Algeria in 2022

According to civil protection officials, the bus transported travelers between the two cities in the Algerian Sahara, Tamanrasset, which has an airport and more than 150,000 residents, and Adrar, where only about 2,000 people live.

According to National Road Safety Delegate Nacef Abdelhakim, in 2022 Algeria recorded nearly 22,980 road accidents with 3,409 dead and 30,479 injured.
