Jair Bolsonaro was not reelected president, but the Caymmi family is still divided over Bolsonarianism. Singer Alice Caymmi, daughter of Danilo and granddaughter of Dorival, said in an interview that the relationship with some family members is “very difficult, almost impractical”. The crisis in one of the most famous clans in Brazilian music became public in a 2019 interview given by Nana Caymmi, in which she supported the former president and attacked the likes of Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso alongside her own niece.

Family is split over Bolsonarism
“It was Bolsonarism that divided my family. It became very difficult, almost impractical, unfortunately. i love my aunt It hurt me more that she spoke badly about me in the interview than that she spoke well about Bolsonaro. She said that my career hadn’t worked out. Correct. I can not understand. But in the case of Nana, none of this has anything to do with politics. All of this is an emotional, psychic discourse. It’s a discourse that has a very strong underlying theme and it’s a lot bigger than any other topic of this nature,” Alice said in an interview with TV Forum on YouTube.

Alice Caymmi points to the religious radicalism of her cousin Stella, author of the biography of Dorival Caymmi and daughter of Nana, as one of the explanations for part of the family’s political support for Jair Bolsonaro.
“Stella, Nana’s daughter, had a wonderful academic background. She wrote my grandfather’s biography, including. A wonderful biography. A very, very intelligent person. But on this academic path, she was always very Catholic because she was very religious and easily seduced into that way of thinking. Stella became increasingly radical within religion, and with that religious radicalism came political radicalism. Then came Olavo (de Carvalho) and founded the party by doing all kinds of manipulations. Cowardice, and unfortunately that’s where she took root,” believes the singer, who sees her aunt’s position differently:
“Nana is a different question, completely different. Nana is not a religious radical. Nana is so bombastic and has always been very controversial. If she is fragile, she will become more aggressive. She suffered things that are better not to talk about and that she won’t talk about it for a lifetime… She chose to go down and shoot and I totally understand that. I understand the anger, I understand the revolt, I understand it all. She said many ugly things, her weapon has always been this one. I love my aunt Nana. As much as she doesn’t want it, I will continue to love her for the rest of my life.”
