The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards on March 12 have been announced. Canada features in several categories, but not in Best Foreign Film. A report by Louis-Philippe Ouimet.

There’s also Women Talking by Toronto filmmaker Sarah Polley. Polley is also in contention for the Best Adapted Screenplay trophy. Her film is based on the novel of the same name by Manitoba author Miriam Toews.

Another Canadian, director Domee Shi, is in the Best Animated Feature category for Turning Red. The film follows the story of Meilin “Mei” Lee, a 13-year-old Toronto girl who discovers that she has the ability to transform herself into transform into a giant red panda.

The Flying Sailor, a National Film Board of Canada Production directed by Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis, is nominated for Best Animated Short Film.

Montreal-born makeup artist Adrien Morot is receiving awards for his work in The Whale and Canadian actor Brendan Fraser’s stunning — and critically acclaimed — physical transformation into a severely overweight man.

Return of traditional cinema

The nominations were announced Tuesday morning at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California by Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams.

Last year’s Oscar nominations were dominated by online viewing platforms – Apple TV+’s CODA won Best Picture and Netflix received 27 nominations – but this year the spotlight is on the films that lured viewers to theaters after two years of the pandemic.

The nominees for the Academy Award for Best Actress are: Ana de Armas for Blonde; Cate Blanchett for tar; Andrea Riseborough for To Leslie (To Leslie); Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans and Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Five artists have won the Academy Award for Best Actor: Brendan Fraser for The Whale; Colin Farrell for Banshees by Inisherin; Austin Butler for Elvis; Bill Nighy for Living and Paul Mescal for After Sun.

Last year’s Academy Awards drew 15.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen, up 56% from the all-time low of 10.5 million for the 2021 TV show. This year, ABC brought back Jimmy Kimmel to host the March 12 ceremony.
