When the possibility of a deal with Tyreek Hill first hit the radar screens on Wednesday, the deal was focused on two teams: the Jets and Dolphins. It definitely didn’t start quite so narrowly.
According to a source with knowledge of the situation, every NFL team (except the Chiefs, of course) has been contacted about Hill’s availability. Surprisingly, no one said anything about this.
As explained by one of the team sources, agent Drew Rosenhaus asked that information be handled with care, and coaches and team leaders “respected” him. In terms of pragmatism, all teams should deal with him as he represents so many players. However, since every team knew about it, it would be very easy for one of them to spill the beans.
The process began immediately after the trade that saw recipient Davante Adams move from the Packers to the Raiders. At that point, Hill wanted an Adams-type deal or exchange. The leaders were ready to cooperate, and there was never any conflict between the player and the team.
Ultimately, about a dozen teams approached Rosenhaus about a possible trade for Hill. Some teams were doing their homework on the Hill. At least one team feared that Hill had become a “diva”.
The Dolphins had no such hesitation, paid Hill more than the Chiefs were willing to offer, and turned down five draft picks to make it happen. As is the Jets. We were told it was a close situation – and that Hill was seriously considering the Jets.
