This Sunday (21), Alok His work with Brazilian indigenous peoples was recognized by an award at the Cannes Film Festival.
At an event on the French Riviera sponsored by the Better World Fund and organized by the Amazonia Fund Alliance/Unesco, the artist was honored for his commitment to the rights and culture of indigenous peoples.
Alok’s award was accepted on stage by the federal MP Celia Xakriaba and from the cacique Mapu Huni Kuicurrently an actor in the telenovela earth and passion, by TV Globo. In her speech, Célia highlighted the partnership with the DJ and spoke about the importance of promoting the indigenous agenda:
On behalf of our dear friend and DJ Alok, we are here to thank you for this award and to remind everyone of the importance of preserving the forest and indigenous voices. It is not enough to know the song and sacred prayers of indigenous peoples, it is also necessary to protect the voices and lives of these singing people and Alok understood that. This award goes to him because he not only learned how to sing, but also the importance of protecting and defending the voices and bodies of indigenous people. I take this opportunity to say that the demarcation of Indigenous land is urgent and that there is an urgent need to oppose the approval of PL 490 and the timeframe that amends the land demarcation legislation and contact more flexible with isolated races. prohibits the expansion of already demarcated areas and allows exploration of indigenous lands by miners.
After chanting a holy prayer of his people to bless all present, Mapu added:
I want to say that I believe and trust each of you very much so that we can make a difference not only with words but also with deeds. Make a difference to protect humanity, for a healthier climate, purer water for future generations so we can keep the world in balance. And finally, I would like to thank UNESCO and all the brothers who welcomed us and opened the doors for us to be here and make this spiritual alliance possible. Finally, I would like to thank our DJ and brother Alok, because the future is ancient.
What a victory!
Alok’s US tour prevented his attendance at Cannes
Alok was unable to attend the event in person as he was on tour in the United States where he performed at the 27th edition of the Electric Daisy Festival (EDC) in Las Vegas.
Nonetheless, he attended the tribute via video call, reaffirming his willingness to help indigenous people occupy diverse social spaces. In his speech, Alok commented:
I am very happy: this award means a lot to me! I’m sad that I can’t be with you guys due to the tour I’m doing in North America. I thank the Better World Fund, the Amazon Fund Alliance and Unesco and I want to share this award with the Brazilian indigenous community who have struggled for centuries to value their identity and their right to life. In Brazil schools to this day teach a colonial vision that ignores the importance of the culture, knowledge and wisdom of a people who have respected, celebrated and preserved nature for thousands of years.
Very important!
