PITTSBURGH — The already struggling Mets team took a hit Friday they could hardly afford when Pete Alonso ended up on the injury list with a bruised bone and a sprained left wrist. The Mets expect his recovery to take three to four weeks, which should knock Alonso out until around the All-Star break.
Alonso was drilled in the left wrist by a 97-mph fastball by Charlie Morton in Wednesday’s loss to the Braves in Atlanta and traveled to New York the next day for an X-ray. These came back negative but subsequent tests resulted in Alonso’s updated diagnosis.
The team placed him amid a spate of roster changes in the IL ahead of Friday’s game, replacing him with infielder Luis Guillorme.
Alonso’s loss is a major blow to a Mets team that has relied on him almost exclusively for its performance production. Alonso’s MLB-leading 22 homers is the same number as his next two teammates combined. He’s accounted for 29 percent of the Mets’ home runs and 18 percent of their RBIs.
Alonso has also been one of baseball’s most consistent players since joining the league in 2019, appearing in 97.4 percent of the Mets’ games. This marks the second stint of his career for Alonso, who missed the 10-day minimum in 2021 due to a right wrist sprain.
Prior to this latest injury, Alonso was on pace for 57 homers. His goal of becoming the first National League player of his generation to turn 60 now seems far less realistic.
That’s the least of the Mets’ worries. The team goes to Pittsburgh after losing five straight games, including a win in Atlanta that edged the Mets out of first place with 8 1/2 games, a season-high.
