The Montreal Alouettes offered defensive lineman Mustafa Johnson a new two-year contract on Monday.
The 24-year-old American therefore has a contract valid until the end of the 2025 season.
This is the second contract extension offered by general manager Danny Maciocia since the start of the offseason. Last week he secured the services of quarterback Cody Fajardo for another year. The GM also agreed to terms with Shawn Lemon and Darnell Sankey, two key defensive players who could have become free agents in February.
Back to Johnson: The University of Colorado Boulder Buffaloes junior joined the “Als” in 2022. This season, however, he truly established himself as an indispensable part of the Sparrows' defensive line.
“I’m excited to be back with the Alouettes,” Johnson said in a press release. I feel at home in Montreal and appreciate the trust the team has in me,” said Mustafa Johnson. I look forward to continuing to help the team win another championship. “There is a lot of talent in this locker room.
Johnson totaled 43 tackles, including seven sacks, in 18 games during the regular season. He also scored a touchdown in the October 14 game against the Elks in Edmonton. During the three playoff games leading up to the Gray Cup, he made eight tackles and brought down the opposing quarterback twice.
The defensive player also stood out for another reason. Fans who attended the Alouettes' training sessions noted that the cold never stops them from warming up bare-bellied – even when the cold and snow are intrusive.
