The Montreal Alouettes did the unthinkable by winning the Gray Cup, triumphing in dramatic fashion over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Sunday night. This is an unexpected victory by a united team.
The Montreal team experienced a full range of emotions at the start of the season with a new head coach, a new general manager and a new owner.
For Alouettes offensive player Kristian Matte, the victory is even sweeter because few people had faith in this team at the beginning of the season.
“We have believed in ourselves since the beginning of the year,” Matte said on LCN on Monday. We knew we had something special with everything that was going on. New owner, new “coach”, the players we had. We really agreed from the start. Such a united team, we are all brothers.
“It’s something special. We always believed in ourselves and we showed that to everyone this year.”
Matte didn’t stop there.
“There were a lot of people who thought we couldn’t do it,” continued Matte, 38, who was with the Alouettes in 2010 when they won the Gray Cup. Everyone had us last at the beginning of the year. Like I said, just watch, we’ll show you and that’s exactly what we did.”
Even though the Alouettes were still behind at the end of the game, they never stopped believing.
“We believed in ourselves,” said Matte. Cody played really well on the drive at the end of the game. He handled it really well. The plays that were called were the perfect plays. There was no doubt. We knew we would win the game. We could tell by the bombers’ faces that we would defeat them. We were calm. We couldn’t wait to finish the game and score a touchdown. We became champions and it was a “Drive of Champions”.
