Amazon CEO plans to invest $15 billion in India

Amazon.com is planning an additional $15 billion investment in India, according to CEO Andy Jassy.

Jassy told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his meeting on Friday.

The investment will bring the e-commerce giant’s total investment in India across all its businesses to US$26 billion by 2030.

Amazon’s cloud-computing unit Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced last month that it would invest 1.06 trillion rupees ($12.9 billion) in the country.

According to an Amazon blog post, Modi and Jassy spoke on a range of topics including supporting Indian startups, creating jobs and empowering individuals and small businesses in global competition.

Friday was the last day of the Prime Minister’s trip to Washington. He was the guest of honor at a State Dinner at the White House Thursday night, attended by many tech CEOs, politicians and celebrities.

On Friday, Modi met with US and Indian tech executives, including Apple’s Tim Cook, Google’s Sundar Pichai and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, and urged global companies to “manufacture in India.”

Google will open a global fintech operations center in GIFT City in western India’s Gujarat state, Pichai told reporters in a video shared on Twitter by Portal partner ANI Company.

“We announced that Google is investing $10 billion in the Indian Digitization Fund and we will continue to invest through it,” Pichai said.
