Amazon’s “Operation Triumph” has already started its “Castings” in Barcelona: “What this program produces is very strong”

Endless queues this Monday in front of the Barcelona trade fair in the early hours of the morning. Applicants wait just a few seconds for their turn to sing in front of one of the four casting judges for a new edition of Operación Triunfo. The music competition returns after the 2020 edition, the last broadcast edition, was suspended for a few weeks due to the pandemic. This time it will not be shown on TVE or any private channel, but on the Amazon Prime Video platform, with a former participant in the first edition, Chenoa, as presenter. But there will still be weekly live galas. The mostly very young participants sang one of the 50 songs selected by the organization and a few others of their choice. “We are all super excited, what this program is producing is very strong.” This is how Noemí Galera, director of the programme’s academy, described the mood of her team just minutes before the start of the tests, which will last until September in various Spanish cities. Tinet Rubira, head of the Gestmusic production company responsible for the format, assesses the level of the participants: “There is a lot of talent.”

The competition returns thanks to the platform, with more content and for a larger audience since it will be broadcast outside of Spain. “Instead of going to a chain with the usual branches, people will go to a platform, which we’re all used to,” Galera argued. This year, in addition to the 24-hour broadcast and usual galas, the competition will add a daily magazine to be broadcast on the platform. Rubira believes in exponential growth: “What we will do in Spain will be seen in 31 Latin American countries.” In addition, according to the producer, it is the first time that live content has been created serially on a platform. “The experiments that have been carried out so far worldwide with the platforms that provide live content are a football game, an event, a concert … It has never happened before,” Rubira pointed out.

The heat was no obstacle for the youngsters who waited patiently under the scorching sun for their turn. Laura Rodríguez, 24 years old, introduces herself for the first time: “I have no expectations because there are so many people, but dreaming is free.” Tania Caelles (21) and Aída Martínez (26) are sitting with their friends waiting, accompanied by some guitars. They’ve been in line since half past eight in the morning and don’t know when they’re going to enter. Cristina is 24 years old and one of the first in line. He’s from Madrid, but when he saw the casting announcement he didn’t think twice: “I’m passionate about music and when I saw it I immediately said, ‘I’m going to Barcelona.’ Around 20 young people are waiting by the door with a “Prime Pass” that allows them to skip the line, although they still have to do the casting. They got it because they were chosen after uploading a video on social media of them performing a song.

Isaac Pacheco, 25, was one of the first to sing because he already had such a pass, and he picked the songs “Hit me baby one more time” by Britney Spears and “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga. He is from Venezuela and lives in Girona. The first round is over: “I didn’t expect that, I was a bit unsure.” The organization estimates that around 2,000 young people will go through the cast of this new Operación Triunfo in the city. Access tests will be halted throughout the summer in Zaragoza, Santiago de Compostela and Valencia, among others, before arriving in Madrid on September 19.
