Amber Heard Appeals, Citing First Amendment

As she predicted after the verdict, Amber Heard appealed the outcome of the trial, in which she challenged her ex-husband Johnny Depp in court, leaving him with broken bones and ordering her to pay over $10 million in damages. According to Heard, “mistakes” made during the Fairfax, Virginia trial prevented a “fair and equitable” verdict.
“We believe the court made mistakes that prevented a fair trial consistent with the First Amendment on free speech,” said a rep for the actress, who is suing Depp for defamation based on an opinion piece on the Washington Post report, in which she, without naming her ex-husband, described herself as a “domestic violence survivor”.
For his part, Johnny Depp said he was “confident” there would be no “consequences” in the appeal: “The jury – said a spokesman for the former ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ – listened to a wealth of evidence presented during a six-week trial and has come to a clear and unanimous verdict that it was Amber who repeatedly defamed Mr Depp. We have confidence in our arguments and that the verdict will not be changed.”
