Following the fatal attack by an American tyrant on a man in the United Kingdom, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declared this Friday a ban on keeping this breed of dog in the country.
“American Bully XLs pose a danger to communities and will be banned,” Rishi Sunak announced after the death of a man attacked by two dogs of this species on Thursday afternoon. According to the Prime Minister, changes are needed to maintain security in the country.
A reaction that is considered exaggerated by some professionals, who believe that the dog’s behavior is due only to its upbringing and not to its breed.
More and more attacks
The incident that occurred this Thursday afternoon in Stonnall, near Birmingham, was one too many for the British government. Before this victim, others also suffered from American Bully XL.
Just last weekend, an 11-year-old child was attacked near Birmingham. The girl suffered serious injuries but miraculously survived.
South Yorkshire Police reported four attacks on children by this breed of dog in two days. One of them, a 15-year-old boy who was attacked in Sheffield, is still in hospital.
Likewise in London, where police are actively searching for the owner of a pit bull that attacked a 4-year-old boy on Monday.
A particularly alarming observation that led the government to think about solutions to stop these accidents.
a request for a review of the legislation
“It is clear that these are not a handful of poorly trained dogs,” the Prime Minister said on X (formerly Twitter). For him, owners, whether well-intentioned or not, will never be able to control their dogs, this behavioral problem is in their nature.
However, after these explanations, a fear arose. Since American Bullies XL are not recognized by the Kennel Club as a separate dog breed, a ban would amount to including all other dogs in this category.
This has led to calls for existing legislation to be revised so that it focuses on the crime itself rather than race.
This news does not please veterinarians, who put forward several hypotheses to explain their behavior and prevent these dogs from being banned from the UK. Among other things, exit restrictions that led to fewer interactions and a deterioration in the quality of training due to high demand.
Interior Minister Suella Braverman said for now she is relying on the police to ensure the safety of English citizens and take the measures they deem necessary.
