Three US soldiers were killed and dozens injured in a drone airstrike on US forces stationed in northeastern Jordan, near the border with Syria, President Joe Biden and the country's officials said on Sunday (28).

Biden blamed Iranianbacked groups and said the attack took place on Saturday (27).

“While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know that it was carried out by Iranbacked radical militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq,” the president said in a statement.

At least 34 Americans were injured, but their conditions were not reported.

These were the first deaths of American troops in the region since the war between Israel and the Hamas group began in the Gaza Strip.

The attack represents a significant escalation in the already tense situation in the Middle East, where war broke out in Gaza following the Hamas terror group's attack on Israel on October 7, which killed around 1,200 people. According to the local health ministry, more than 26,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli counterattack on Gaza.

Although the United States has so far officially taken the position that Washington is not waging war in the region, the country has carried out attacks against targets of Yemen's Ruti groups, which have attacked merchant ships in the Red Sea.

“We will continue our commitment to the fight against terrorism. And have no doubt: We will hold all those responsible accountable at the time and in the manner we choose,” Biden said in his statement released by the White House.
