DETROIT — In less than two weeks, the New York Yankees will travel to Toronto to play the Blue Jays in their first visit to Canadian territory since the coronavirus pandemic began.
Under current Canadian law, each member of a given club’s traveling party must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at least 14 days prior to entering Canada to be permitted entry into the country, unless a special permit is granted.
As spring training began, the Yankees still had a handful of players who had opted not to get vaccinated, and their availability was in question as the team faced a three-game series against Toronto on Sunday, May 1 the blue jay should travel.
But manager Aaron Boone, who previously stated he didn’t think this would be a problem for the team, implied he had a fully vaccinated active roster when he went ahead of the Yankees’ Tuesday night game against the Detroit Tigers in Comerica spoke Park.

“I think we’ll be in a good place as I understand it. Yes,” Boone said when addressing whether he expected to have everyone he wants for the series at Rogers Center on the active list.
When asked if things had changed since he first addressed the media in the spring, when he mentioned traveling to Canada was “a problem” because they still had “at least a couple of guys.” who were not vaccinated, Boone declined to address specifics.
“To be honest, I don’t know the schedules of everything,” he said. “I just…my understanding is we’re going to be okay.”
When Boone raised the issue of unvaccinated players in the spring, he said he was willing to speak to any unvaccinated person if he felt it necessary.
“If it becomes an issue, I would have conversations with guys,” Boone said March 14 in Tampa. “I’ve had people in my life who have made decisions on both sides, which has sadly polarized us as a nation and as a world. So I’ll certainly communicate with our boys, but in the end it’s a personal choice.”
