The Presidency’s special adviser on international affairs Celso Amorim said this Sunday (25) that it was in the public interest to keep Russia cohesive and acknowledged that the situation is still difficult to understand.

In an interview with UOL, the former foreign minister said that even after power was restored, the incident weakened Vladimir Putin’s government.

The Wagner Group militia threatened Putin between Friday and Saturday and took control of one of the country’s cities. The paramilitary group also signaled that they would meet in the Russian capital, but a deal ended the uprising.

According to Amorim, “at a certain point, the scenario appeared to be headed for civil war.” For the advisor, “an imploding Russia is an immense danger, and it is in everyone’s interest that Russia remains cohesive.”

International observers share the assessment of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) righthand man on foreign policy issues. These indicate the existence of 300 militias in the country and a possible power struggle between explosive regions.

With the crisis dominating the international agenda, Amorim represented Brazil at a G7 meeting over the weekend. The G7 meeting took place in Denmark and during the meeting the Kiev government tried to adopt a statement in which the participants signaled their support for parts of the Ukrainian peace plan, but the idea didn’t succeed.

Approving the document would not be feasible for Amorim. The idea of peace must arise from talks between Russians and Ukrainians. The Brazilian stressed that at the meeting the decision was made to continue the dialogue, which is seen as progress given the international crisis.

The process is not yet turning into a summit, but it cannot be ruled out that this could happen in the future. During the meeting, the absence of US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan undermined the meeting’s ambitions. The American decided to stay in Washington.
