Actress and director Amy Schumer has responded to online comments speculating about the appearance of her face, saying it is “more puffy than normal” due to endometriosis.
Schumer was on US television to discuss the second season of Life & Beth, the series she writes, directs and stars in.
Afterwards, she was met with a barrage of jokes mocking her face, as well as medical speculation and supportive comments.
“I enjoyed feedback and reflections on my appearance,” she said.
The actress, whose tone was obviously semi-serious, added on Instagram that she was interested in her appearance “as all women have been for almost 20 years.”
“Thank you for all the posts about my face! And you're right, it's more swollen than normal right now. I have endometriosis, an autoimmune disease that every woman should read about.”
“There are some medical and hormonal issues going on in my world right now, but I’m fine.”
One woman tweeted in support of Schumer's condition, writing, “Endometriosis is no joke. I looked like I had stuffed my face full of filler. I was unrecognizable. My whole body was inflamed and swollen. I’m not a fan of Amy Schumer.” Other than that, can we please stop shaming women and their bodies?
Another added: “Did you take a moment to ask yourself why you care what Amy Schumer's face looks like before you posted what Amy Schumer's face looks like?”
Schumer added in her post that “women's bodies have historically received little medical attention compared to men's” and pointed out that “a woman needs no excuse for her appearance and owes no explanation.”
The actress, who also appeared in the television series Inside Amy Schumer, the 2015 film Trainwreck and 2018's I Feel Pretty, has appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and The View.

Schumer refocused on her TV show on Hulu, about a woman who returns to her childhood home after losing her mother, adding, “Like any other woman/set, I feel self-conscious some days and damn well, on others.” I want to put a bag over my head.
“But I feel strong and beautiful and so proud of this TV show I created. As an author, leading actress and director.
“Maybe we can focus on that a little bit. I had backup dancers for Fallon but my face is the headline hahaha. Anyway, I hope you enjoy Life and Beth. Love and solidarity.”
