An unflattering poll for Trudeau and Poilievre

Is Justin Trudeau still the man for the job leading the Liberal Party of Canada? An exclusive pan-Canadian Leger survey conducted for the La Joute program returns unflattering results.

When asked “Do you want Justin Trudeau to run in the next election?” 54% of voters polled said no and 20% abstained.

If Trudeau is no longer popular in Ottawa, should his successor be found internally? Former Liberal minister Gaétan Barette has said he must stand his ground against the Conservatives regardless of the candidate.

“If things don’t change, (Trudeau) is in danger. Will the person who will take his place be the weight ahead of Pierre Poilievre? I am asking the question about the Minister of Finance [Chrystia Freeland], not sure if she makes the weight. She doesn’t necessarily have the charisma that a Pierre Poilievre would have.”

Trudeau’s star has faded since his first election in 2015. Ironically, the PLC needs to find a “golden boy” to succeed him as party leader, Barrette adds.

“Does the Liberal Federal Party currently have this? I am not sure. Would there be one from the outside? Perhaps. There is a big dilemma.”

On the other hand, this Léger poll is by no means edifying for the Conservative leader: only 23% of Canadian respondents believe he has the prime minister’s seed, versus 45% who said no and 32% of respondents abstained.

“It’s almost twice as many saying ‘yes’ and that’s quite interesting, adds Yasmine Abelfadel. This morning I read Thomas Mulcair’s column in the Journal de Montréal which said: “Poilievre does not exploit Trudeau’s mistakes”. The proof is that there is no way he can prove that we need to get rid of Prime Minister Trudeau and his Council of Ministers. Today we find a Pierre Poilievre who only manages to convince already convinced activists.

In Quebec, more than half of respondents (54%) believe he would not make a good prime minister, with 33% abstaining on this issue.

“It’s not good news for Pierre Poilievre, this poll,” concludes Yasmine Abelfadel.
