Analysis: Henry Cavill was the worst Superman in the movie, but that’s not his fault

The president of the studio ADVERTISEMENTJames Gunn, announced on Wednesday the 14th that the next film great man the British actor will not be seen Henry Cavillwho lived the character four times in the cinema.

Cavill was a fine actor, charismatic on screen and personable off it Worst Movie Supermanbut that’s not his fault.

Character Summary: Superman was created in 1938 by Jerry Seal and Jose SchusterChildren of Jewish immigrants living in the United States in May in the context of the rise of Nazism and World War II.

The original stories of the characters were innocent and funny especially with the love triangle that was there Clark Kent in love with Lois Lanewho only had eyes for Superman, in a scheme repeated ad nauseam in superhero comics.

O great man original wasn’t that “super”: it didn’t fly, it didn’t shoot lightning from its eyes or freeze things with its breath. But the powers grew as popularity increased, reaching a point where he could knock planets out of orbit.

And Superman’s popularity has extrapolated to comics, where he’s been an absurd success (resulting in dozens of heroes like him). the last son of krypton migrated to radio, television, theater (there was even a musical!) and cinema. There were always small differences in uniform or level of power, but the essence was always the same.

Regardless of the medium, Superman has always been a role model hero, someone fans can never be but look up to. He’s ethical, honest, doesn’t lie, doesn’t kill. So it was with Bud Collyer (who played him on radio), Kirk Alyn and George Reeves (both in films) and Bob Holiday (in theatre) before he got involved Christopher Reve and star of the box office hit, which has had three sequels and a spinoff (super girl🇧🇷

Christopher Reeve has created a character who is goodnatured, innocent, a little goofy but purehearted, and with a great deal of drama when needed, as with the death of Lois Lane in the first film (more than four decades later, I hope this is not a spoiler). It was difficult to reach this level of excellence.

in 2006, Brandon Routh was a likable successor to Christopher Reeve in theaters, reflecting his mannerisms, but it was not successful. And then it was time Henry Cavillwho debuted in the role in 2013, directed by Zack Snyder🇧🇷

Context is important here. When Snyder directed Superman The Man of SteelDC’s main competitor in comics was already established in the seventh art: The Marvel Cinematographic Universe had established itself as a pop phenomenon, with adventures that were both funny and dramatic at the same time. Ironman, Captain America and Thor They were so successful that they paved the way for adaptations of completely unknown characters like Manta & Dagger (who?) and Hellstrom (huh?).

With Superman The Man of Steel, Snyder delighted DC’s leadership, which placed him in cinemas as the mastermind behind the DC Universe. And that was the big problem for Henry Cavill.

Returning to the beginning of this text, Cavill is a good actor and would have everything to be a Superman at Reeves’ level, but he had to play a character extremely far removed from the comic book hero. If at headquarters the last son of Krypton would rather die than kill someone (villain or not), the Superman of Cavill/Snyder have no such shame. He kills. And let it die And it’s not even there.

In an iconic scene from Superman The Man of Steel, Clark Kent has his own father die so no one finds out he had powers. By the way, killing is not the only moment. There are several moments where Cavill’s Superman is shown to believe he is better than humans he is specifically told this by his mother Martha and his friend Lois Lane. And in practice, with his enormous carelessness in dealing with the lives of others, he shows how much he believes in it.

Is this the Superman dreamed up by Siegel and Shuster? No of course not. But it was Snyder’s vision for DC superheroes: dark, unethical, violent.

Note the tone of the films snoop: The two characters that appeared in them and won solo movies are great for illustrating what happened. THE wonder woman that originated in Superman x Batman she was a tough warrior who enjoyed fighting; The one who starred in the two solo films, despite being played by the same actress (Gal Gadot), turned out to be a light, funny, human, and compassionate heroine.

The same goes for the Aquarius by Jason Momoa. in the justice league, is a grumpy and boorish brute. In James Wan’s solo film, it’s someone more fun. It’s as if Snyder’s tone for DC movies required dark, amoral characters with no sense of humor (the first suicide squad) fits there, but since the project didn’t work out, DC gradually released its characters for lighter features.

The cinematic universe idealized by Snyder didn’t work out with DC starting over, now under the eyes of James Gunn. The director did a great job with unsung heroes like Guardians of the Galaxy, Suicide Squad and peacemaker to see if he can repeat the achievement with the DC medallions.

Cavill just had no luck playing the Kryptonian. If her character weren’t from so many gritty scenes (like the infamous “Martha moment,” from Superman x Batman) and far from the essence of the hero (like the criminals he ruthlessly kills at the beginning of the same film), it could perhaps be reused. But it won’t be possible.

It’s up to the talented Cavill to find other projects I hope they’re better. And we fans of the character (like Cavill himself, by the way) hope that in his next film adaptation, the inevitable differences won’t result in a completely disfigured character. Superman doesn’t kill or think he’s better than humans. When in doubt, check out Kingdom Come (by Mark Waid and Alex Ross), Superman The Man of Steel (by John Byrne) or a movie with Christopher Reeve among many other good options.
