André Braugher died last Monday: The actor who played Captain Holt has died at the age of 61. His agent broke the news by calling it a short illness: today he confirmed to Deadline that the actor died of lung cancer a few months after receiving the diagnosis.
Braugher, born in Chicago in 1962, starred in the series Homicide and Glory in addition to his role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, for which he won two Emmys. He began his career on the small screen in parallel with his career in the cinema: in the same year as his debut on television with “Kojak” BRaugher made his film debut in “Glory” alongside Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. He went on to star in other films such as Sliver of Fear, City of Angels (in one of the most iconic roles of his career), Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer.
But his favorite place has always been the small screen: thanks to the role of detective Frank Pembleton in “Homicide,” he gained great popularity and won the 1998 Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series. The profession of the role that will make him immerse himself in the hearts of thousands of fans around the world is not much different, even if this time it is a comedy series: Since 2013, Braugher has been the face of Captain Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The role earned him four of the eleven Emmy nominations he received throughout his career and allowed him to show audiences his great versatility as an actor. The cast of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has written loving messages in recent days to remember Braugher.
