Andrew Braugher, actor best known for playing Captain Raymond Holt on the series “Brooklyn NineNine,” has died of lung cancer. The cause of death was revealed this Thursday (14) by an American consultant to the Hollywood Reporter magazine.

According to the Deadline website, the diagnosis was made just a few months ago.

The acclaimed actor, winner of two Emmy Awards, died on Monday (11). The American press at the time only mentioned a “recent illness.”

Braugher was born in Chicago, USA, in 1962. He made his film debut in 1989 with the film “A Time of Glory” alongside Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman.

In the 1990s, he was one of the stars of the series “Homicide,” which won him an Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama Series in 1998.

In 1998 he played “Cassiel” in “City of Angels”. In the following years, further film appearances followed in “Poseidon” (2006) and “Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer” (2007).

In 2006, he won his second Emmy for Best Actor in a Miniseries for his role in “Thief.”

He gained even more worldwide recognition as Captain Holt in “Brooklyn NineNine.” Between 2013 and 2021 he played the chief detective in the comedy series. The character, who was considered a father figure at the police station, was openly gay.

“I felt like it was an opportunity to do something completely different than the rest of my career,” Braugher said in a 2019 interview with the Associated Press.

His role on “Brooklyn NineNine” earned him four Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (2014, 2015, 2016 and 2020). He received 11 award nominations throughout his career.
