Actor Andre Braugher died on Monday at the age of 61 after a short illness.

The Chicago-born actor is best known for his work on Homicide: Life on the Street, in which he played the role of Detective Frank Pembleton in 100 episodes from 1993 to 1998.

He played Raymond Holt in 153 episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, appearing from 2013 to 2021.

He had won two Primetime Emmys in his career: in 2006 for his role as Nick Atwater in Thief; and for his work on Homicide: Life on the Street in 1998.

News of the actor's death was first reported by Deadline and was also confirmed to Variety by his spokesperson Jennifer Allen.

Braugher was a graduate of Stanford University and honed his acting skills by studying at the Juilliard School's drama department.

His first film appearance was in 1989's “Glory,” which starred Denzel Washington and Matthew Broderick. In the film by director Edward Zwick he played the Union soldier Thomas Searles.
