Andrew Lloyd Webber has announced the death of his eldest son Nicholas Lloyd Webber from stomach cancer.

“I am devastated to report that my beloved older son Nick passed away a few hours ago in Basingstoke Hospital. His whole family is gathered and we are all completely bereft. Thank you for all your thoughts during this difficult time.”

The son’s illness was announced by Lloyd Webber earlier this week, when the composer announced he would miss the Broadway opening of his latest musical, Bad Cinderella, to stay with a hospitalized Nicholas. Andrew Lloyd Webber turned 75 on the opening night of March 22nd.

Nicholas Lloyd Webber was 43 years old and had recently been transferred from the hospital to the hospice.

In the earlier message, Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote: “I want to thank you for spreading messages of support for my son Nick. He has now been transferred to a hospice and is struggling through,” he said in the video. “I think he’s gotten through the worst of that first pneumonia he got as a result of his cancer, which is just awful. We are all here and the family has gathered here and I think it was the right place for all of us. I will visit Nick in a minute and pass on all the amazing wishes I had for him from all over the world.”

Nicholas, the son of Lloyd Webber and his first wife Sarah Hugill, was a Grammy nominated composer who scored and co-produced the original 2021 album with London Cinderella cast. Nicholas also composed the film The Last Bus (2021), directed by Gillies McKinnon and starring Timothy Spall and Phyllis Logan.

Nicholas has also written the music for the BBC 1 drama Love, Lies and Records, among others.
