Andrew Lloyd Webber reveals his son is critically ill with cancer: ‘Absolutely devastated’

Broadway and West End composer Andrew Lloyd Webber announced on Saturday that his 43-year-old son Nicholas is “seriously ill” with stomach cancer.

The ‘Phantom of the Opera’ composer says his son Nicholas has been suffering from the disease for 18 months, according to .

“I am absolutely devastated to say that my eldest son Nick is seriously ill,” the 74-year-old said in a statement. “As my friends and family know, he has been battling stomach cancer for 18 months and Nick is now in the hospital.”

Nicholas Lloyd Webber is a Grammy-nominated composer, known for his work on British show Love, Lies and Records and film The Last Stop.

Alongside his father, the eldest son served as producer on the original cast album Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella in 2021, earning him the nomination.

“We’re all praying Nick will come around the corner,” his father’s statement continued. “He fights bravely with his indomitable sense of humor, but for now my place is with him and the family.”

The ‘Cats’ composer was due to be in New York City this week to attend the opening night of ‘Bad Cinderella’ – a revamped version of the 2021 musical – but announced he would not be attending due to his son’s condition.

“I won’t be able to cheer for the wonderful cast, crew and orchestra on opening night,” Lloyd Webber said, revealing that his son’s illness was also the reason he wasn’t able to attend any of the show’s previews.

The show opens when Lloyd Webber’s legendary musical The Phantom of the Opera concludes its legendary run on Broadway in April.

The composer was supposed to be in New York City this week to attend the opening night of Bad Cinderella. Love, Lies and Records and the film The Last Stop.

Lloyd Webber also announced that he helped write the music for King Charles’ coronation, which is due to take place on May 6th.

“I composed it for the choir and organ of Westminster Abbey, the ceremonial brass and the orchestra. I hope my anthem reflects this happy occasion,” said Lloyd Webber.

Webber’s “Bad Cinderella,” a modern retelling of the classic fairy tale told through the lens of unrealistic ideals of beauty, is set to premiere Wednesday at Broadway’s Imperial Theater.
