Android or iOS, it’s a bit like remaking Windows vs Mac. The debate erupted with the launch of the first iPhone and Android devices in 2007 and 2008. For more than a decade, the question of which operating system dominates the debates has stirred debate, even if the brat has seemingly died down. In fact, both Android and iOS are very popular and mature enough to satisfy users who have their habit by now. However, the Instagram boss decided to revive the issue, declaring on the social network Threads that Android is “better now” than iOS. Adam Mosseri doesn’t explain why he thinks Google’s operating system is superior to Apple’s, but his answer leaves no room for doubt.
Adam Mosseri’s brief outing reignites the battle between Android fans and iOS fans. This is in response to a question from YouTuber Marques Brownlee (MKBHD), who asked his community for their “hot takes,” or hot comments, about technology. The Instagram boss’s output, in passing, suggests that iOS already had an advantage over its major competitor.
Instagram: From iOS exclusivity to Android crush?
Some may not remember this, but Instagram was once exclusive to iOS. In the early 2010s, Instagram was one of the flagship apps on iOS and therefore only compatible with iPhones. After all, to discover an Android version, you have to wait until 2012 and the takeover by Facebook (now Meta). The latter has long suffered from comparisons with the version intended for Apple smartphones.

In recent years, the differences aren’t as pronounced, and the fact that Instagram is part of Meta is no stranger to that shift in direction. The American social networking giant doesn’t like Apple very much and doesn’t seem to be doing its competitor any favors. iPad owners who are still waiting for an Instagram app suitable for the large screens of these tablets know this all too well. Instagram has never seen fit to launch a special variant and users have to settle for the iPhone version.

On the other hand, we note that the new Threads application will receive new features first on the iPhone. An update will then bring them to Android, while the application is not yet available in Europe. In the old continent, Android is the most popular mobile operating system and its market share reached 65.2% in June 2023, according to StatCounter. iOS is second at 34.22%, while the other operating systems share the remaining crumbs.
For example, if the percentages in France are comparable, we find that iOS is more popular in the UK (50.78%) than Android (48.73%).
Android or iOS: a question of affinities?
The question of whether Android is really better than its competitor seems impossible to answer. Both operating systems are now mature, which is shown by the fact that no new major versions have been available for several years. Both Google and Apple are refining their copy, and we’re also noticing that the two operating systems are becoming more and more similar. They offer more and more similar functionalities and the novelties that are visible on one side end up arriving on the other side. We are still waiting for your opinion in the comments.
