Thirty-five years after the last count, Tokyo has made a new estimate of the number of islands that make up its archipelago using the latest technology. Result: the land of the rising sun would not move in 6,852 islandsas we thought, but 14.125.
Which country has the most islands in the world?
Some rankings put Norway at the top, others neighboring Sweden, but it all depends on how the tally is made. Japan seems to have decided to ‘tell’ its islands: Japan’s Geospatial Information Authority has conducted a study on the subject, the first in thirty years, and came to a surprising conclusion as ‘14,125 islands have been identified. This corresponds to 7,273 additional islands compared to the last count.
The case
“The last reconnaissance, released by the Coastguard in 1987, used maps to count the islands – defined as landmasses at least 100 meters in circumference – which gave a total of 6,852 islands, according to UK media. In the most recent study, the scientists used it Same size criteriabut this time they counted the islands using scanned maps and cross-checked the information with previous aerial photographs,” the experts explain.
This led to this new result, the it’s not official yetwhich are to be announced by the authorities in the coming weeks.
This could give Japan a place in the world ranking of countries with the most islands “without changing the size of Japan’s territory as a whole, or at least for the moment,” the experts explain.
