The 25-year-old Dominican played for the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022 and went through 16 games without a decision. He had a 2.41 ERA in 18 2/3 innings.

After hitting the 12th-best average speed in the major leagues with his fastball of 98.8 mph in 2022, Fernandez is 1-1 and a 5.17 average in 50 games of his career.

The Jays also added Chris Bassitt, Adam Macko, Erik Swanson and Casey Lawrence to their pitching team this offseason.

The Toronto team is aiming for their first playoff win since 2016, when they lost to the Cleveland Indians in the American League Finals. In 2022, she was eliminated in the best runners-up series in two games against the Seattle Mariners.
