This year, the German National Prize, worth €30,000, goes to painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer. The world-class artist has received several international awards and is one of the most important contemporary artists, announced the German National Foundation in Hamburg. “Kiefer belongs to the first generation of German artists to deal directly with the question of identity and the nation after the war and the Holocaust.”

The 78-year-old has lived in France since 1992. He will receive the award on July 6 at the French Friedrichstadtkirche in Berlin. The tribute will be performed by art historian, journalist and author Florian Illies.

According to the National Foundation, Kiefer will pass on the €30,000 prize money to this year’s sponsorship award winners, the youth orchestra projects Hangarmusik and Démos in Berlin and Paris. The prize is associated with 20,000 euros.

The foundation was created in 1993 by former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and his colleagues. It honors people and organizations committed to democracy and cohesion.
