Migration is perhaps the most important tool of coexistence and diplomatic relations in America. Their challenges determine political balances, affect societies and public services, transform economic ecosystems and are ultimately a crucial engine of change. At the same time, the triggers of regional flows of unprecedented proportions in recent history reflect the failure of a model: violence, misery, social conflicts and, more and more clearly, the climatic changes that “initiate profound changes in the production system, especially in rural areas.” António Vitorino said so (Lisbon, 66 years old), Director-General of the International Organization of the United Nations for Migration (IOM), who visited the Dominican Republic to attend the XXVIII Iberoamerican Summit Former Portuguese Minister and former EU Justice Commissioner Vitorino defends that the migration phenomenon both in Latin America and in the rest of the world “is not a static photo of a country” but “a process that requires the collaboration of everyone”. Cooperation is crucial, he emphasized in an interview with EL PAÍS, in order to protect migrants and fight against mafia.
