Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Antti Raanta made a spectacular and desperate gesture to prevent the Buffalo Sabers from scoring in the third period on Tuesday night at PNC Arena.
The Finnish veteran stepped in front of Casey Mittelstadt by spearing the puck several meters away from his semicircle. He then raised his stick to frustrate Jordan Greenway on the return.

Raanta’s maneuvers were worth it as Martin Necas broke the deadlock in overtime and gave the Canes a 3-2 victory.
Brady Skjei and Sebastian Aho each had two points for the winners. Tony DeAngelo scored his first goal of the season on the power play.
Only four were left for Fleury
Supported by his Minnesota Wild teammates, Marc-André Fleury scored another win that brings him closer to Patrick Roy’s mark. In the UBS Arena he convincingly defeated the New York Islanders 4-2.
The Quebec goalkeeper now has 547 wins on his record, four fewer than Roy and second in history. After beating the New York Rangers on Saturday, Fleury did it again with 26 saves.
Patrick Maroon and Joel Eriksson Ek each scored a goal and also contributed to a teammate’s success. Kirill Kaprizov and Vinni Lettieri also added their names to the scorers list.
Panarin reaches the dozen
While still in the Big Apple, Artemi Panarin continued to have fun, reaching the 20-point plateau in the Rangers’ 5-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings.
The Russian has also picked up a point in each of his 12 games this season. Alexis Lafrenière got a pass into the net in the second period, the Blueshirts’ fourth of the quarter.
Vincent Trocheck scored two goals and former Montreal Canadiens defenseman Erik Gustafsson had two assists. He’s not the only former Habs member to stand out, as Ben Chiarot (two assists) and Jeff Petry (one assist) also contributed to the Wings side.
