Brazilians report the consequences of the earthquake in Marrakech

The journalist Gilberto Ferreira was in Marrakesh on business. He and other Brazilians were in the hotel at the time of the earthquake.

“At first I thought it was a plane accident because it is near the airport and there are several planes flying by all the time and I couldn’t understand anything because many people were speaking in Arabic and many were crying. Someone came by and said in English that it was an earthquake. The whole thing took about 40 to 45 seconds at most. (…) what we experienced was something apocalyptic,” he said.

Businesswoman Teresa lives in Morocco, but in a region far from the center of Marrakesh where the earthquake was not as destructive.

“People who are homeless sleep outside their homes in the open air here. They’re camped here, whole families,” Teresa said.
