Apple iPhone 14 Plus pre orders drop analyst blames strategy

Apple iPhone 14 Plus pre-orders drop – analyst blames strategy of abandoning minis for full-size models

Apple’s iPhone 14 Plus pre-orders have declined, showing that its strategy of offering base models in standard and larger “Plus” sizes, as opposed to last year’s “Mini,” isn’t working.

Ming-Chi Kuo, a famous Apple analyst with a good track record of predicting the tech company’s launches and new features, examined some leading indicators for pre-orders to see how demand among the four new models released earlier this month looks so far.

Kuo looked at the availability and shipping estimates to see that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are showing “good” or “neutral” results so far. But pre-orders for the standard iPhone 14 and 14 Plus models are “poor”.

“The pre-order result of this new product is significantly lower than expected, which means Apple’s product segmentation strategy for mainstream models this year is failing,” Kuo said in a blog post about the larger iPhone 14 Plus, a 6.7-inch phone.

Apple has not published its own pre-order numbers. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus both launch in October, while the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max launch tomorrow.

The Cupertino, California-based company only offered its base model iPhone in standard and larger sizes this year, as opposed to the iPhone 13, which came in standard and mini sizes.

The iPhone 13 Mini has a 5.4-inch display and the iPhone 13 is 6.1-inches. One of the company’s few budget offerings, Apple’s iPhone SE features a 4.7-inch display.

According to Kuo, stock levels of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus available at retail at their launch “reflect weak demand.”

Kuo explained that the company will likely have to trim November shipping forecasts for the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus if numbers don’t improve.

That, in turn, could negatively impact Apple’s revenue growth this year.

All iPhone 14 models will have a new Emergency SOS service launching in November, allowing people in remote areas to get help via satellite connection. The feature will be free for two years – but Apple has yet to announce how much it will cost after that.

The company says on its website that once iPhone connects to a satellite, it will automatically send a message, your location, medical ID (if set up), and the amount of battery capacity left on your device to the nearest 911 dispatcher.
