Apple supplier suspends production at two Chinese factories | coronavirus pandemic

Operations at factories in east China’s Kunshan were halted after COVID-19 cases were reported, the report said.

A subsidiary of Apple supplier Foxconn Technology Group has closed two factories outside of Shanghai after new Covid-19 cases were reported locally, the company said on Monday.

Foxconn Interconnect Technology Limited factories, also known as FIT, are located in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, a small town between Shanghai and historic Suzhou.

FIT’s website says it supplies components for companies specializing in wireless and Internet of Things (IoT) products, including its own brands, Linksys, Belkin, Wemo, and Phyn.

The South China Morning Post reported on Monday that operations at two factories in Kunshan have been suspended since last Wednesday and employees have been confined to their dormitories.

Foxconn acting spokesman Jimmy Huang in Taipei told Al Jazeera that operations at Foxconn’s main campus will continue.

In a follow-up statement from the company, Foxconn said the cessation of operations would have limited impact as production had been moved elsewhere.

“Because production was previously moved to backup factories, the factory’s main products are in overseas shipping warehouses, and stocks are still sufficient, the impact on the company’s business is limited,” the company said.

China is facing its worst COVID-19 outbreak since early 2020, with millions in lockdown as the country continues to pursue a controversial “dynamic COVID-zero” strategy to eliminate the virus.

A strict lockdown in Shanghai since late March has disrupted production at international companies like Tesla and prompted food shortages that have sparked rare public dissent among residents.
