New round, new luck: also in 2023, the European Commission will offer train tickets to young Europeans under the “DiscoverEU” initiative. The purpose of the action? EU citizens aged 18 should be able to explore Europe and its rich cultural heritage in a sustainable way. The current round of “DiscoverEU” entries runs from March 15, 2023 (12:00 Central European Time, CEST) to March 29, 2023 (12:00 CEST). In spring and fall, a total of 70,000 “Travel” passes are made available to applicants in the 2 application rounds.

Discover Europe with a Commission Free “Travel” Pass

The initiative targets 18-year-old Europeans born between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005. The prerequisite for registration is that you have successfully passed a selection questionnaire (answering 5 questions from the questionnaire and an additional question) and who resides in the EU. In addition to the 27 EU countries, young people residing in a third country associated with the “Erasmus+” program can also apply – namely from Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey. Selected people can use their “Travel” pass to “experience” Europe for up to 30 days, from June 15, 2023 to September 30, 2024 – alone or in a group of a maximum of 5 people.

Additional discount card “DiscoverEU” with many benefits

As in 2022, the “DiscoverEU” discount card will be available again this year in addition to the “Travel” pass: it offers more than 40,000 discounts on public transport, culture, accommodation, food, sports and other services in eligible countries. Young travelers can also participate in the “DiscoverEU” meetings, which consist of a cultural program lasting from one to three days in all “Erasmus+” countries. Participation definitely pays off!
