Spring is peak season in the series. It was on traditional TV and it’s in the platform era. The nearing of the end of the semester to attend the Emmys quickens the pace of powerful premieres, and the start of a new quarter invites new bets to be made to win over viewers and subscribers. Among the premieres of the month, a black comedy stands out, put in the pools for the prizes, the return to say goodbye to Midge Maisel, the thriller that has become the second most expensive series in history, or the portrait of the less beautiful side of the acting profession in the third season of Filmin’s own production.
In addition, some Spanish series finales: El pueblo (Day 14 on Amazon Prime Video) will end with its fourth episode and El internado: Las cumbres (Day 7 on Amazon Prime Video) will say goodbye with its third season. Some are leaving, others are repeating (Welcome to Eden season 2 will be available on Netflix on the 21st), and others are arriving. William Levy becomes Montecristo in a contemporary take on the classic by Alejandro Dumas (21st on Movistar Plus+). In You would do it too (26th on Netflix) and the comedy Headless Chickens (28th on HBO Max), witnesses to a violent event choose not to betray their savior.
More information
In The Good Mothers (Day 5 on Disney+), a group of women fight from the inside against one of the most dangerous mafia clans. Alfred Molina is an inspector investigating murders in a quaint town in Three Pines (AXN 25). Keri Russell is a diplomat who balances her position as an ambassador and her marriage to a politician in The Diplomat (20th on Netflix). The return of Sweet Tooth (27th on Netflix) brings back the imagination and The Afterparty (28th on Apple TV+) parodies different movie genres as its characters investigate another murder. And for those who want to experience a religious Holy Week, on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, Movistar Plus+ broadcasts The Chosen, a series that has become a phenomenon in cinemas and covers the life of Jesus Christ.
Of this month’s releases and comebacks (which you can check out on our calendar), we recommend trying these picks.
self-adhesive
Joana and Mireia Vilapuig, protagonists of “Selftape”.
Joana Vilapuig became famous as one of the young protagonists of Pulseras rojas. Her sister Mireia, who also took part in some episodes of the Catalan television series, also followed the acting path. Now the two twenty-year-olds are the protagonists and co-creators of the autofiction self-tape (they spell it like that, with lowercase letters), which shows the other side of the actor’s work, that of the disappointments and castings they find themselves in saying no, while others ( maybe, like your own sister in this case) say yes. Packed with six sensibility chapters, the series follows two characters through personal and professional frustrations and wounds.
Where and when to see? It will premiere on Filmin on April 4th.
Row
Steven Yeun, in the first episode of Bronca.
Two strangers have an incident with their cars in a supermarket parking lot, which triggers a stampede on the street. One of them is a failed contractor and the other is a businesswoman who is unhappy with her life. This goofy rage will quickly escalate into a mutual revenge story that will bring out the darkest side of both of them. Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) and Ali Wong are the protagonists of this black comedy by Lee Sung Jin, a screenwriter of Korean origin who has worked on series like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia or Silicon Valley. An entertaining story, with a very good rhythm, a great soundtrack that delves into the dark side of people and receives great praise from the specialist press.
Where and when to see? The 10 episodes of just over half an hour can be seen on Netflix on Thursday 6th.
Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies
The protagonists of ‘Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies’.
Four years before the story told in Grease, a group of girls came together to claim their place at the institute, fight against patriarchy, and grow strong against a hostile world. Because apparently Rizzo and Co. weren’t the first Pink Ladies. This musical comedy pays homage to the Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta film by traveling back to a stylized 1954 to follow the stories of various girls being teased or pushed aside and using a contemporary perspective and vintage musical numbers who oppose moral conventions. Fun with a certain charm.
Where and when to see? It will premiere on SkyShowtime on Friday the 7th.
Schmigadoon!
Ariana DeBose, in the second season of ‘Schmigadoon!’.
Josh and Melissa found true love in the idyllic town of Schmigadoon. It was the only way to escape from this place where the rules of the classic musical were followed. But when real life turns into a pit of dissatisfaction, the couple wants to return to this ideal world. However, they end up in Schmicago, where musicals from the 1960s and 1970s take them into a dark world full of crime, abysses and tragic fates. Chicago, Cabaret or Sweeney Todd are some of the musicals that the second season of this perfect series for lovers of the genre pays tribute to and satirizes.
Where and when to see? The six episodes of Season 2 will be available to watch on Apple TV+ from April 7th.
A spy among friends
Damian Lewis in A Spy Among Friends.
Kim Philby, a British intelligence agent, has worked for the KGB for more than 20 years. When it’s discovered, his partner Nicholas Elliott has to watch his friend to get a confession. Shortly after their meeting in Beirut, Philby leaves without a trace. Now it’s Elliott who faces harsh interrogation to find out what happened in Beirut, whether he helped his friend escape or is another victim of Philby’s double life. This true case, narrated in book form by Ben Macintyre, becomes television fiction starring actors Guy Pearce and Damian Lewis in a classic-style spy story with time-jumping narration and two top-notch leads.
Where and when to see? The six-episode miniseries starts on the 13th on Movistar Plus+.
The wonderful Mrs. Maisel
Alex Borstein and Rachel Brosnahan in season five of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.
Midge Maisel’s journey from housewife to acclaimed comedian is coming to an end. Brilliantly played by Rachel Brosnahan, the character has attempted to make his mark as a stand-up comedian in a variety of settings, from small venues to major tours or a strip club. Now his career takes a turn when he joins the writing team for a television show. Again a terrain that was dominated by men in the sixties. From the final few episodes, we can expect her usual full-speed witty dialogue, actors embroidering their characters, and the house irony of this Amy Sherman-Palladino creation.
Where and when to see? The first three episodes (followed by one each week) will premiere on the 14th on Amazon Prime Video.
barry
Bill Hader, in the final season of ‘Barry’.
Another series that says goodbye and was always present at the award galas. After a brilliant third part that combines meta-television and the most dramatic and tragic comedy possible, this story about a hitman-turned-amateur actor who can’t find a way to quit his old job comes to an end. The story will return with Barry in prison after being arrested at the end of last season. There are only a few chapters left to see if he manages to lead a normal life, or if everything he carries on his shoulders prevents him, and what is the fate of the remaining losers who populate this story .
Where and when to see? The fourth and final part airs Monday the 17th on HBO Max.
someone somewhere
Jeff Hiller and Bridget Everett in the second season of Somebody Somewhere.
This dramatic comedy was one of the best premieres of 2022. Its portrayal of friendship, self-improvement, and life in a deep American city was filled with sensitivity and love for characters that were as imperfect as they were adorable. In the second season, Sam and Joel settled into a comfortable routine while the first accepted that families are difficult, especially hers. An exciting and truthful series that is so coveted on television and not always equaled.
Where and when to see? The new chapters premiere on HBO Max on the 24th.
Mrs Davis
Betty Gilpin, star of Mrs. Davis’.
Damon Lindelof’s new series (Lost, The Leftovers, Watchmen) couldn’t have a more promising premise: A nun faces above all else to destroy an artificial intelligence before it causes a global collapse. Played by Betty Gilpin (GLOW), nun Simone is suspicious of Mrs. Davis, a popular artificial intelligence with a legion of fanatical followers. With that starting point and the names behind it, expectations are very high and it was on many of the most anticipated lists of the year. The first trailer is an odd mix of sci-fi, action and adventure, all starring a nun with a great belligerence.
Where and when to see? It premieres April 25 on HBO Max.
love and death
Jesse Plemons and Elizabeth Olsen in Love and Death.
The true case of Candy Montgomery, which had a television version on Candy (Disney+) starring Jessica Biel a few months ago, now returns to the big screen with Elizabeth Olsen at the helm of the cast. Montgomery, a Christian homemaker from a quiet Texas town, was accused of killing her friend Betty Gore with an ax on June 13, 1980. Montgomery was in a relationship with Gore’s husband. The story and trial (including testimony obtained in hypnosis sessions) were the meat of the audiovisual. A true television classic, David E. Kelley is the creator of this drama co-producing with Nicole Kidman.
Where and when to see? It premieres Thursday the 27th on HBO Max.
The left-handed son
María León, protagonist of “The Left-Handed Son”.
Rafael Cobos, screenwriter of La peste and La isla mínima, among others, makes his debut as a solo series creator. In six episodes of less than half an hour, she explores identity and motherhood. María León is a mother with a complicated relationship with her son. This mother will find a lifeline in another woman who belongs to a very different world but is in a similar situation with her son as she tries to understand and win back her son. The progress on display is indicative of raw drama treated with sensitivity in a series where great care has been taken in formal processing, both visually and aurally.
Where and when to see? In the Movistar Plus+ on April 27th.
citadel
Priyanka Chopra, in the first episode of “Citadel”.
The Russo brothers (Avengers: Endgame) take the lead in being the second most expensive series in history, behind only The Lord of the Rings. Production complications, filming and the pandemic have seen the budget of this spy thriller skyrocket. Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra are two spies for the Citadel organization, an independent global agency that selflessly keeps everyone safe. Eight years ago, the evil Manticore organization wiped out the Citadel. Since then, these two agents have been living normal lives without remembering who they were. Now they have to fight the villains again. The advance promises action galore and sexual tension.
