Warner Bros. Pictures and DC's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom grossed $4.5 million at the domestic box office in Thursday night previews.

It marks not only the final installment of the DCEU, but also the latest failure for DC this year, as all three previous releases – “The Flash”, “Blue Beetle” and “Shazam!” “Fury of the Gods” – in each under-challenged.

The numbers suggest the film is now targeting a total of $35 million to $40 million for the four-day holiday weekend – a significantly lower start than the first film's debut weekend take of $67 million.

In fact, the first “Aquaman” grossed twice that amount — $9 million — in its Thursday previews. The number is better than the $3.3 million and $3.4 million earned by “Blue Beetle” and the “Shazam” sequel, but is far behind the $9.7 million in previews from “The Flash,” the $7.6 million from previews of “Black Adam” and last month’s $6.6 million from “The Marvels.”

The first Aquaman grossed a staggering $335 million in North America and $1.15 billion worldwide, a number that the sequel isn't expected to come close to matching.

The film also faces strong competition: films like Illumination's “Migration,” which earned $1.5 million in previews, the romantic comedy “Anyone But You,” which grossed $1.2 million, the by Zac Efron directed wrestling drama “The Iron Claw” and the still going strong “Wonka.”
