After the reception with a Mayan ceremony together with the Minister of the Sector, Óscar Cordón, and the Minister of Social Development, Abelardo Pinto, the President explained that this process aims to create the foundations for social construction.
The 65-year-old head of state focused on the health issue, where government agencies, communities and people work together.
“In line with our strategy, we are committed to conducting an intensive dialogue with the population that includes the most diverse groups in our nation,” said Arévalo.
The start of this crucial process of social participation will take place hand in hand with the indigenous peoples, explained the standard bearer of the Semilla movement and a sociologist by profession.
“Since the transition period, we have begun this process of dialogue with the various sectors of society and have repeatedly identified the need to integrate traditional and western medicine,” he emphasized.
The president argued that indigenous knowledge enriches health care, making it more humane and closer, which he encouraged consideration.
“The community engagement we are embarking on today represents an opportunity to both strengthen health at the community level and build a strong national consensus on health,” he added.
He appreciated the cooperation and participation in this joint effort while acknowledging the local leadership of the Ministry of Health and Human Services and communities in this regard.
“Together we will create a healthcare system that truly reflects individual and collective needs and desires,” said the former diplomat and fellow academic.
He appreciated the trust in the government, in its institutions and the willingness to integrate to be part of this significant moment of change.
The visit of Arévalo and senior government officials to Sololá also includes outreach to communities and exploration of Lake Atitlán's problems.
