Argentine Confederation of Trade Unions calls for strike against Milei

The strike will take place on January 24, 2024, one day before Congress votes on the president's new package of measures

The CGT (General Confederation of Trade Unions), one of the largest unions in Argentina, has called for a demonstration this Thursday (December 28, 2023) on January 24, 2024 against the economic and labor policies of President Javier Milei.

According to Argentine newspaper Clarín, the protest will begin at 12 p.m. and last until midnight. The law was called for one day before the vote on the new measures in Congress, on January 25, 2024.

On Wednesday (December 27), Milei sent a legislative package to the Legislature that sets new guidelines for reforming the state.

The document, entitled “Law of the Foundations and Starting Points for the Freedom of Argentines,” in free translation or “Bus Law,” declares the “public emergency in the areas of economics, finance, taxation, social security, security, defense, tariffs, energy , Health, Administration and Social Affairs until December 31, 2025”, with the possibility of an extension for another 2 years. Here is the entire package (PDF 2MB, in Spanish).

The document also contains an article on the ratification of the DNU (Decree on Necessity and Urgency), a super package to deregulate the economy announced on December 20. The announcement sparked nationwide protests.

The last general strike called by the union took place on May 29, 2019, at the end of Mauricio Macri's government and before the elections in which the then president ran against Alberto Fernández and lost.
