In an operation by the Argentine police in collaboration with the country’s Federal Revenue Service, agents arrested this Wednesday (11) in Buenos Aires three Chinese men who had a package worth $700,000 taped to their bodies.

According to the newspaper Clarín, federal tax officials must continue to investigate the Chinese arrested with dollars.

One of them, Yongguo Wang, 51, had $400,000. In his employment reference he states that he belongs to a category that pays a lower tax rate and that he works as a painter and decorator.

The peso, Argentina’s currency, is rapidly losing value and the country has few dollar reserves. Therefore, the Ministry of Economy lowers restrictions on purchasing dollars.

In the center of Buenos Aires there are illegal exchange offices (called “cuevas”) and people offering businesses to buy and sell dollars on the street (the “arbolitos”).

There were also several operations in the city center in which $100,000 was confiscated. There were also people in this area of the center who had money tied to their bodies.

The government’s intention now is to prevent transactions in the informal market.
